Comments:   Cl atoms were generated by laser photolysis of Cl2 at 355 nm and allowed to react with the alkyl and aromatic iodide substrates. The visible absorption spectra of the RI-Cl adducts were recorded at 263 K and 440-520 nm. Cavity ring down spectroscopy was used to monitor the decays of the adducts. For the alkyl iodides the absense of an effect of added O2 on the absorbtion spectra was taken as an indication that the spectra pertain to an adduct and not products of H abstraction. Adducts are not observed at higher temperatures and adduct stabilization temperatures are reported.
