Author(s):   Self, D.E.; Plane, J.M.C.
Title:   A kinetic study of the reactions of iron oxides and hydroxides relevant to the chemistry of iron in the upper mesosphere
Journal:   Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys.
Volume:   5
Page(s):   1407 - 1418
Year:   2003
Reference type:   Journal article
Squib:   2003SEL/PLA1407-1418

Reaction:   FeO + Fe + O2
Reaction order:   2
Temperature:   209 - 381 K
Pressure:  2.00E-3 bar
Rate expression:   4.6x10-10 [±2.1x10-10 cm3/molecule s] e-2910 [±1081 J/mole]/RT
Bath gas:   N2
Category:  Experiment
Data type:   Derived from fitting to a complex mechanism
Pressure dependence:   None reported
Experimental procedure:   Flow tube - Data taken vs distance
Excitation technique:   Discharge
Time resolution:   In both real time and by end product analysis
Analytical technique:   Laser induced fluorescence
Comments:   Mainly an experimental study with some DFT (B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,p)) quantum calculations to help in understanding detailed reaction kinetics. Fe produced by laser ablation and detected by LIFT at 248.3 nm. FeOx species produced by reactions of Fe and other FeOx species with NO2 or O2. O and H atoms produced by reactions in a microwave discharge and detected through titration with NO2. Rate expressions extract from model of concentration profiles using other known reaction rates. Total pressure typically 1.5 torr N2.
